Windows 10 has ended: what to do with your old office PCs

Microsoft ended Windows 10 support in October 2025. If your office still has Windows 10 machines, here are your options, and how to retire the old ones safely.

What changed

Microsoft stopped providing free security updates for Windows 10 on 14 October 2025. The one-year extended update option for home users has now run out too. Businesses can still pay Microsoft for Extended Security Updates for a limited time, with the price rising each year, but it's a stopgap rather than a plan.

Why it matters for a small business

Unpatched machines are an easy way in for attackers. It also affects certification: Cyber Essentials requires the software you use to be supported and receiving security updates, so an office still on Windows 10 will struggle to pass.

Your options

  • Upgrade to Windows 11 if the hardware supports it. Many machines from the last few years can.
  • Pay for Extended Security Updates to buy time while you budget for replacements.
  • Repurpose older machines with a supported system such as ChromeOS Flex or Linux, for tasks that don't involve sensitive data.
  • Replace them, which is the cleanest long-term answer for most offices.

Retiring the old machines without a data leak

Windows 10 machines have often been in use for years, so they hold years of email, client files and saved passwords. Before they leave the building:

  1. Back up anything you still need.
  2. Sign out of accounts and release them from any device management.
  3. Wipe each drive with a method suited to its type, and verify it.
  4. Keep a certificate for every drive.

Older machines have less resale value, but working ones are still worth something once they're wiped, and they can go to charities or reuse schemes rather than landfill.
